Genesis is the book of beginnings, from the creation of the world to the Israelites' captivity in Egypt. Genesis is at times allegorical, and at other times completely a factual account. It is the basis for understanding the entire relationship of man with God, and God with humanity. We can also better understand our own nature through these words, since they reveal so much about God's nature.

Exodus takes the Israelites from the Egyptian captivity out into the wilderness. Among other things, it chronicles the institution of the Passover and the giving of the Mosaic Law.

Leviticus continues the Israelites' wanderings, with great emphasis on the continued exposition of the Mosaic Law.

Numbers is the account of the first census of the Israelites, and continues the saga of their wanderings in the wilderness.

Deuteronomy is the summary of the last three books: Moses, as the Israelites near the Promised Land at last, exhorts them to be strong, not to abandon God's blessing, to remember their past transgressions, to follow Joshua. Then he dies, never setting foot in the land of his inheritance.
