Joshua, the Israelites' new leader, leads the people into the Promised Land across the Jordan. God, as promised, gives them victory one people at a time, but not without setbacks, as the Israelites are a "stiff-necked" people.

Judges relates the period of history when God is still their King, and judges arbitrate the people's disputes. Caleb, Barak, and Deborah feature prominently. The usual cycle of rebellion, retribution, repentance, and restoration is again seen.

Ruth offers a picture of our redemption through the blood of Christ, with Boaz as a type of the redeemer. A wonderful respite from all the battles of the books which precede and follow this idyll.

1 Samuel records the lives of Samuel, Saul, and David. Samuel is remembered as Israel's first great prophet, Saul as Israel's first king, and David as Israel's greatest king.

2 Samuel begins with Saul's death and leads us through David's reign up to his sinful census. A prominent theme is David foreshadowing Jesus as "shepherd of his people."
